The National Rugby League Samoa hosted a leadership training programme last week Thursday.

In partnership with Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture, the training looked at building leadership skills and self-confidence of girls not active in sports.

Themed “Beyond the Goalpost Star”, the training of leadership programme for secondary school girls was held at the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture headquarters at Malifa.

According to National Rugby League Samoa Development Manager, Gabriel Apelu, this is the second year for this programme.

She also stated the training provides a solution focused on identifying barriers in physical activity and ways to overcome it.

“Beyond the Goalpost Star is about enabling girls who do not participate in physical activities to become self-confident and find their leadership skills so they may forge a trail for all their peers.

“Beyond the Goalpost Star is specifically for young women in secondary schools. It is a solution focused approach to identify barriers in their involvement in physical activity and come up with solutions on how to overcome them.”

Ms. Apelu also mentioned that this year’s conference focused on leadership, dreams and goal-setting, health and new session run by the Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development on Violence against Women.

A.C.E.O. for M.E.S.C. Sports Division, Luatua Semi Epati, encouraged young women to be proactive in becoming leaders not only in the classroom, but also out in their communities.

“The Ministry is very supportive of this leadership programme, especially for our young women of today.” Epati said.

Apelu also said in 2017, when Beyond the Goalpost was first introduced, only four schools took part in the programme, which included Leiififi College, Vaimauga College, Papauta Girls College and Senese.

The number of schools this year has doubled. It has now included Maluafou College, Pesega Collge, St Joseph’s College and St Mary’s College.

Beyond the Goalpost Star 2017, Taumaia Samau of Vaimauga College reflected on what she has learnt from the programme so far.

“B.T.G Star helped me become a leader in my school by giving me self-confidence to lead myself and others. To achieve my goals and my dream of making it to U.P.Y. in 2018, I need to surround myself with people who will help me get to where I want to go.”

Ms. Apelu acknowledged all the organisations that supported the programme.
