Deputy Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, officially opened the Commonwealth Telecommunication Organisation’s Pacific Broadband Forum held at the Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi Building Conference Centre, Apia, this week.

Hosted by the Ministry of Communications and Information and Technology and the Office of the Regulator, the three-days conference is being attended by more than two hundred participants from Samoa and around the world.

In addressing the conference yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Fiame highlighted the critical role of the internet in connecting and developing the world – including many small nations like Samoa.

Secretary General of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation, Shola Taylor stated that technology offers enormous potential to enhance lives in the Pacific.

“This event will examine the challenges faced in achieving universal broadband access, geographical, legal, financial and political to name just a few,” Mr. Taylor said.

“We hope to identify effective solutions that can be easily adopted and implemented in each Pacific island as we work together to make broadband accessible to all."

“Throughout the Commonwealth, broadband is proving to be an enabler of innovative solutions in areas such e-government, e-business, e-education and e-health, helping to make information and services readily available to millions of people.”

According to information provided by organisers of the meeting, the Forum  will acknowledge the crucial role of the network as the platform to help transform community life.

It will review how communities are connected, administered and manage to achieve social, economic and environmental sustainability.

This year’s event will examine areas including the development of national broadband strategies and relevant technologies, while also focusing on applications and data.

The conference will feature an exhibition with presentations and interactive panel discussions throughout.
