Disabled man pleads for a job

By Aruna Lolani 30 April 2017, 12:00AM

God created every human on this planet and he created each one of them differently.

That is the firm belief of 57-year-old Patolo Sauvao Elia from the village of Faleasiu.

Mr.Elia has a disability in that one of his arms is shorter than the other so he is able to use only one arm.

Mr. Elia was born like this and he doesn’t think of it as a curse.

He lives his life as a happy man who’s willing to go out everyday and try his best to help his family.

He doesn’t have a family of his own yet; his family right now, is his brother and his wife and their kids.

“They are the only family I have and I’m thankful that my brother is helping me out by providing me with the basics.”

“I’ve  got a roof over my head and I also get to do work such as taking the children to school, preparing food and doing other errands.”

But what Mr.Elia really wants is to be accepted in the  community that can help him make a living, which simply means having a job.

“My life is hard because I’m someone who wants to work and yet I’m not accepted by some of the companies that I have applied to because of my disability.”

“Everyone needs two hands.”

“But I still want to believe that there is something out there for me.”

“I can work, I can do work. I can weed the grass; I can plant taro, bananas and anything else.”

“I assure you that I am a good farmer.”

Mr. Elia said he’s heard about the Nuanua O Le Alofa and he’s always dreamed about being a part of it.

“I have a strong work ethic and I’m motivated to work because I don’t want to be someone who will be just sitting around if something happens to my family.”

“I want to be able to offer some sort of help too.”

“I’m not ashamed to say that I need money because that’s another reason why I’m still looking for a job but you know businesses take in the people they need and can benefit them, and it seems that that’s not me because of my disability.”

“But I can work; I’ve already told you the kind of work I’m good at.”

“I want to see how far I can go, how I can make a difference despite my disability.

“God didn’t put me on this earth for nothing.”

“I want to make money and I want to do it the right way like everybody else, by working hard for it.”

“So if anyone in the community like N.O.L.A. or others have any opportunities for me, it would help me a lot and that’s all I’m asking for.”
