Former Lecturer Gounder dies

A former Lecturer who planned to set up Samoa’s third university, Christopher Gounder, has died.

The Samoa Observer understands that his death was among three suicide cases reported by the Police during the weekend.

Gounder, who had revealed his plan to set up the “The Oceania A+ Educational solution University” in Police custody at Tafa’igata, had been accused of attempting to murder his wife.

Last weekend, the Samoa Observer was told that attempts to save his life after he had self-harmed were unsuccessful.

In the Supreme Court, the matter involving Gounder came up before Chief Justice, His Honour Patu Tiava’asu’e Falefatu Sapolu. His lawyer, Tuisa Tasi Patea, told the Court his client had passed away.

Prosecution lawyers were Fuifui Ioane and Rexona Titi of the Attorney General’s Office.

Chief Justice Patu asked the prosecution if they have proof that the defendant had passed away.

Ms. Ioane told the Court that they were informed by the Police that the defendant had passed, however there is no proof.

C.J. Patu then adjourned the matter to next week Monday.

“This matter is adjourned to Monday next week for prosecution to provide a death certificate for the defendant to confirm that he had passed away,” he said.

Last year, Mr. Gounder revealed his plan to set up a third University in Samoa with the aim to promote quality education. Gounder is Indo-Fijian.

In the meantime, the Samoa Police Service urges the public who are in similar situations, to seek help through the N.G.O. – Fa’ataua le Ola on Telephone 30609.

“We want to advise members of the public or individuals who are in similar situations that you are not alone,” says the statement. “If you are feeling depressed and is contemplating suicide, please call for help. Seek help from your friends, church ministers or family member.”
