Such a horrible epidemic

Dear Editor

Re: Man jailed for sex with girlfriend’s sister

This is a horrible epidemic in the South Pacific, not just Samoa I hear.

I am irritated that his excuse is that he was drunk. But apparently there’s some truth in that.

And although he’s sentenced to 8 years, most likely he won’t serve full term.

So I’m curious what type of rehabilitation he’ll undergo before he is released back to society?

I doubt that he’ll stop drinking too when he is out, so who will be responsible for that, so he won’t do it again to another 14 year old?

What are the laws regarding alcoholism?

When I was there last year, I was surprised at businesses openly displaying at front windows all types of alcohol to lure young persons in.

I learned that businesses don’t sell alcohol on Sundays, but what good does that do? People can buy on Saturday and stock up for Sunday!

Those types of laws don’t make sense to me. How about making businesses who sell alcohol be responsible to rehabilitate those who commit crimes because of alcohol?

Perhaps they think twice of who they’re selling alcohol to?

I know... the business owners run the country?

Perhaps a newsworthy story might to foresee in 5-10 years what Samoa would look like at the rate it’s going now - with the devastation of alcohol on family and it’s people!
