Communication critical part of family development

Communication is essential in the foundation of any family.

Silao Tuliatu, 35, from the village of Faleula-Uta says parents play a critical role in the upbringing of their children.

Mr. Tuliatu believes problems arise within families nowadays because there is a lack of communication between parents and their children.

“Few issues have been emerging within families recently, and this is due to the existence of technology and forgetting the foundation we were brought up in,” Mr. Tuliatu told the Village Voice team on Saturday.

Mr. Tuliatu is a father of three and he is the sole provider of his small family.

He believes wrong family foundation today will determine the future of generations to come.

“We have seen so much of issues within families recently in Samoa in the media.

“Young girls and boys tend to do whatever they want in their spare time or even on their phones rather than talking and sharing with their parents.

“Some parents too have been so busy trying to find money to support their families instead of asking their children of their well-being.”

Mr. Tuliatu says latest gadgets have also been the major cause of problems within young people.

“Back in the olden days, we were always outside playing on the mud and socializing with our friends in the village,” he said.

“Nowadays kids have been staying home all day during school holidays and on their phones, even when they are on the road.

“I think our children have spent much time on this not knowing this is having a huge influence on their lives.”

Mr. Tuliatu also mentioned that violence against women in Samoa is getting out of hand.

“Fathers who are still doing this unloving act are the ones who are not going church.

“The reason behind them keep doing this act is because they have no respect to teachings of loving our sisters.”

Mr. Tuliatu adds the solutions lies within us as individuals.

“The main solution for all these issues is to teach our kids the way we were taught.

“That’s the main foundation for us as Samoans when it comes to respecting the elders, especially our sisters.

“And for us parents, let’s hold on to our evening prayers and family time with God, like the saying ‘When Jesus is in a family, it’s a happy family,” he added.
