A 69-year-old Manu Samoa fan is elated at the national team’s comprehensive victory over Germany in the World Cup qualifier match on Saturday.

The national team beat Germany 66-15 to throw the local crowd at Apia Park into a frenzy.

Vaiala village mayor, Samoa Loau Tavita Talapusi, was among hundreds of people who packed the stadium to watch the national side notch their first win in as many games.

“I am very grateful to our boys in blue, they made us all Samoan people as proud as we witnessed a truly magnificent game. I know that from the previous matches we have had a really bad losing streak and of course the nation was very heartbroken,” he told the Samoa Observer.

“Rugby is very important, it is our pride and joy, and we have history with this particular sport which is why it is the national sport of our country. For today’s game, I am marveled at the boys’ performance, a huge improvement compared to previous games.”

Attributing the victory to home ground advantage, the mayor said that was the difference between the two teams as it boosted the morale of Manu Samoa.

“I do not have a favorite part of the game because I enjoyed how the game flowed in terms of scores after scores and that gave me such pride. But I was truly shocked and ecstatic at the same time when our team scored the first score in the game.”

He also credited the German team, saying: “I also applaud the German team with their performance and perseverance throughout the match, they put up a good fight even though we are well aware has so much experience but still, they should be proud of putting up a good fight.”

Having been a supporter of Manu Samoa for over 60 years, the mayor said the team should stay motivated and remain vigilant as they prepare for the second match in Germany in a fortnight.
