Judge Tagaloa farewelled
Chief Justice Patu Tiava’asue Falefatu Sapolu has praised departing Lands and Titles Court Judge Tagaloa Su’a Nua Su’a saying she made a significant contribution to Samoa’s judicial system.
Colleagues, family and friends gathered last Friday evening at the Moanalisa Hotel in Vaitele to farewell the judge, who is returning to New Zealand after seven years.
Chief Justice Patu said words could not describe the contribution that she has made as the judge of the Lands and Titles Court and as an assistant judge.
“We thank you for coming back to Samoa from New Zealand to give back to the Samoan people as part of the Lands and Titles Court. You have great wisdom and knowledge in terms of respect with other people as evident from your experience in the social work field. It is also evident in the work that you do that you are driven to serve but not have any sense of trying to be higher than others. But instead you want to inspire others to follow a humble way of life,” he said.
“I know that you have retired in Samoa’s judicial system but I am very sure you will not stop helping people especially pacific island people who are in New Zealand. I hope there is a great use of the knowledge and experience gained from Samoa while you were a judge so that you may serve others with all those attributes acquired.”
Judge Tagaloa Su’a Nua Su’a said said it was her father’s wish that she returned and work in Samoa despite settling in New Zealand. Returning as a judge on the Lands and Titles Court enabled her to fulfill her father’s wish and she loved her job as it was rewarding for the judiciary and the people.
“I have been so happy and absolutely loved my job as a judge. It was specifically on the Lands and Titles Court, the work itself is very rewarding not only for the judges but also for the people,” she said.
“I moved to New Zealand in 1969, but before that I was brought up in Samoa and as young child who had the opportunity to live on the day our country became independent. I advise those who will take up being a judge as a profession that all the consideration has to be given to a person’s morality. Your own values and adhere values of honesty, trustworthy and obedience to the law because we have to obey the law.”
Life has its difficulties and according to the departing judge they should all be addressed with resolutions – good resolutions.
