Tragedy can come as a burden, a wakeup call or a challenge.

For Pilesi Vai, 44, from Vaitele-uta, the death of her husband has been a bit of everything.

Mrs. Vai is a widower who currently takes care of her six children.

“My husband passed away in 2012 and it was something me and my children have had to move on from,” she said.

“It has been hard. The only way I am supporting my children now is through my work at home, sewing here at home and that’s about it.”

Mrs. Vai said she misses her husband.

“I am really sad because my husband left us so early and I have to take up the pressure, but I am glad the kids are growing up.

“One of my daughters was named the dux of Vaitele Primary School and it is an overwhelming feeling for me to know that my children are overcoming the challenges we face.”

Mrs. Vai added that her daughter’s success has been an inspiration to their family and her as a mother.

“I have worked hard for my children’s education and I am thankful for them the way they are paying me with their success.

“I am excited because even though their father is not with us anymore, I know that they miss him and they are doing all they can to make us proud.”

Mrs. Vai said that children should always be the priority no matter the situation.

“Our kids should be in school no matter what the situation is because some tragedy comes as burden and some comes as challenges but some are to push us through the end.”
