SYDNEY (AP) — Michael Cheika says he plans to quit as coach if Australia doesn't win the Rugby World Cup next year in Japan.

Australia lost to New Zealand 34-17 in the final at Twickenham in 2015.

"The way I see it is like this: we came second in the last one and you have got to improve," Cheika said Wednesday. "So there is only winning the World Cup, otherwise it is probably somebody else's opportunity to do it."

Australia last won the World Cup in 1999. Cheika has been coaching the Wallabies since 2014.
