‘Children are our future’

Teach the kids to know the Lord.

Reverend Kini Ulu-Kini, who led the White Sunday church service at the Methodist Church of Salepouae in Saleimoa, highlighted this to the Samoa Observer.

“We strongly believe that if you train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it, which is a wise biblical verse,” Rev. Kini said.

Children came in their new white attire and delivered emotional songs, dances, plays and Bible verses.

“Today (Sunday) was especially allocated to celebrate every child not only in Samoa but all over the world. It is to take into account the role of a child in any group whether it is within families, villages, and churches. Most importantly they are the future of all these institutions,” Rev. Kini.

“It aims to strengthen the foundation all for the purpose of parents and children’s lives in terms of educating kids with the word of God, which is a light that guides them as they grow up.”

Rev. Kini added it is important for parents to fulfill their role and responsibilities toward their children because they are leaders of tomorrow.

“It is very important that parents uphold their responsibilities in not only being good role models but also instill the word of God within each child so that as a famous saying in the Samoan culture goes: ‘The young of birds are fed with the blossoms of trees whereas the young of humans are fed with words meaning our children are entitled to be nurtured on good thinking and good behavior’,” said Rev. Kini.

At the Congregational Christian Church of Samoa (C.C.C.S.) in Faleasiu, the White Sunday service was no different.

One of the Sunday school teachers, Sunema Togiailua Vaafuti said the dramas play a significant role in the lives of children because of the Bible teachings that help build a child’s character.

“A child is a gift from God and some of us are blessed with these blessings and therefore we should treasure them,” she said.

She said it is heart breaking to witness so many cases of violence from youths, which is why it is important to teach the young ones so that they will grow up to make good and wise decisions.
