Germany surprised me, says fan

Her voice was easily drowned by a swathe of screaming Manu Samoa fans but that did not stop Moana Schreckenberg from barracking for Germany.

Manu Samoa thumped Germany 66-15 in a World Cup qualifier match at Apia Park yesterday, but it was the historical significance of the game that touched the rugby fan.

“Win or lose I came here to give my all in supporting my German team. I came to support my team with a couple of friends. I believe this is the first time Germany has played in Samoa. And this is the first time I have seen German team play rugby. You could say this is a historical event for us and the Germans living in Samoa, especially for us to have a German rugby team,” she told the Weekend Observer.

“Even though our team lost the game but they did a pretty good job. Their performance was well, even it was evident that Samoa had the better team. It was still a good game after all.”

The ability of Germany to score its first try surprised Schreckenberg, as she said this was a big improvement for a country known for football rather than rugby.

Having German and Samoan parents, she moved to Samoa at the age of three and was raised here until she returned to Germany to go to university.

“It is evident that I am surrounded by Samoan supporters but I am a very devoted fan of my German roots. It is not only that but it is good to see a lot of German boys and hopefully I get the chance to meet them and get some photos with them,” she added.

Schreckenberg wished the German team the best of luck in their preparations for the second match against Manu Samoa in a fortnight.

“Keep up with your hard work and perseverance because losing is just part of the journey to achieving great things.”
