2017: Keep those goals simple
It’s that time of year again. When we think about the New Year, most of us would already be making promises to change. Whatever it is we want to change. Indeed, people often reflect back on the past year and look ahead to the upcoming year optimistically.
It is during this time that people set new year’s resolutions looking to improve themselves in the upcoming year. Some New Year’s resolutions are to quit smoking, stop eating junk food or consume less alcohol. But the most common New Year’s resolution is to lose weight.
This upcoming year, instead of setting a goal of trying to lose weight in the beginning of the year just to fizzle out around mid February; try out these five tips from Brandon Sefo, who is a certified Crossfit trainer at Crossfit FatuToa in Vaitele.
5. Think long term:
Fitness is not just something you do. It’s a lifestyle. If you’re really committed to losing weight in 2017, make long term, realistic goals. And stick to them. Consistency is key especially with losing weight.
4. Start small:
If you’re planning on losing weight, introduce change in small increments. Brandon says, “If you usually drink 3 cans of coke, next week, drink two. Then keep reducing it down to zero.” The same logic can be applied to exercise, especially if you’ve never been in a gym before. Set a realistic goal of hitting the gym two times a week and then gradually increase the frequency.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Did I mention hydrate? The human body is made up of 50-65% of water. The need to continually replenish one’s water supply is evident. Brandon’s tip: Carry around a water bottle with you at all times. When you feel hungry, drink some water first.
2. Keep Moving:
This one’s especially for those who have an office job and are stuck behind a desk all day. Brandon suggests, “Stand up and move around after 30 minutes. Get up, go get some water, just keep moving around for 5 minutes before returning to your desk.” Sitting sedimentary for long periods of time can do great damage if done over a span of time.
Getting a good nights rest is pertinent to your mental and physical health. Getting a good nights rest will have you waking up feeling energized and ready to seize the day. Let the upcoming year be one of change and growth. If you’re serious about getting in shape and living a healthy lifestyle start with these tips. 2017 is all about setting goals and smashing them.
