The Vice Chancellor of the National University of Samoa (N.U.S), Professor Fui Asofou So’o, has welcomed the idea of another University being set up in Samoa.

He made the comments when his opinion was sought on the establishment of the Oceania A+ Educational University (O.A.E.S.U) at Poutasi.

The O.A.E.S.U is set up by Christopher Gounder, a former English Lecturer at the N.U.S for three years.

Professor Fui said he is “fine” with the idea of having another University in Samoa.

“If there is another University set up in Samoa then to me, that’s good,” he told the Samoa Observer.

“You know, the more, the merrier. That will only mean that there will be more choices for our students and parents.

“It is also good for competition as well. If you want students to do well, then you need to up the standards of everything in the school.”

Professor Fui did not want to comment on the nature of the O.A.E.S.U and who is setting up the University.

He reiterated that he welcomes the idea to have another University, just as long as the people behind it are ready to run everything.

“If people who are setting up the University can afford and can do everything then why not? If they are not going to the government to ask for money then, I’m all for it.

“As long as they are not asking the government for funding as this is the National University of the country which is funded by the government.

“I’m fine with it.”

When Mr. Gounder announced the establishment of his University, he said the nature of his University is to promote “quality education” in Samoa.
