A visitor to Samoa says he’s grateful Samoans honour ANZAC Day.

Captain Shaun Fogarty travelled to Samoa to participate in the Returned Services Association dawn service yesterday.

He says the New Zealand Defence Force puts a lot of energy into maintaining positive relationships with Pacific countries.

“I was lucky enough to get the nod to come to Samoa,” he says.

Captain Fogarty is a long time serviceman of the N.Z.D.F. and is currently the Director of Strategic Engagement of the N.Z.D.F.

“I was here 30 years ago in my first year in the navy,” he says.

“It’s great to see how the people of Samoa are still paying their respects on ANZAC Day.”

Captain Fogarty previously spent time in France and was responsible for the ANZAC remembrance events there.

He says it is encouraging that people will continue to participate in events that honour the fallen from many years ago.

“It’s great to be here and to see this great public turnout on ANZAC Day,” he says.
