Electric Power Corporation tackles outages

Unscheduled electricity outages could soon be a thing of the past in Samoa.

So assures the General Manager of Electric Power Corporation, Tologata Tile Tuimaleali’ifano, who said they had been working on installing storage batteries to prevent instant power outages.

The problem has cost the country millions worth of damaged personal appliances and commercial equipment.

Tologata said they are aware of the issue and are working hard to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

“We are looking at having this project up and running by January, 2017 and that will alleviate the outages,” he said.

“The solar battery will not only help stop the outages, but it will also store excess solar electricity to be used in the evening.

“So the outages are a result of clouds covering the solar panels and then once the cloud moves the panel starts working again.

“So the solar battery actually helps with the instability of the system, otherwise the power outages will continue.”

According to Tologata, should they pull it off, this will be a milestone for E.P.C. because power outages are among the biggest source of complaints they receive on an annual basis.

The General Manager was unable to provide how much has been allocated for this project just yet.
