Education is one of the weapons our people can use to change the world – and their circumstances.

This is the belief of a mother and grandmother Maria Taulu, 55, from the village of Nofoali’i.

Mrs.Taulu caught up with the Village Voice yesterday during Nu’uausala College’s Prize Giving ceremony.

“We are all aware of the cost of living here in Samoa today, and it is not a good story because it’s so expensive,” she said.

“Education is the only solution to counter the high cost of living here in Samoa, because good education brings good jobs.

“Samoa and the cost of living is not looking well to most of the people but that’s a challenge for us parents to keep our children in school.”

Mrs. Taulu also mentioned that Sports is another part of education.

“Few Samoa kids have managed to travel abroad for sport’s scholarship and that is what he or she will be doing to support his or her family in the future.

“We have also witnessed Samoan athletes competing in National Sports and National teams like All Blacks and become success there, which is all part of education.

Mrs. Taulu also said she feel sorry for those kids who are not in School at the moment.

“I really feel sorry for those young children who are not in School right now but instead selling goods as street vendors around town.

“They deserved more than that and it is really sad seeing them doing that instead of going to school because that’s where they belong at this age.”

“They are missing out on so much stuff of their childhood life within school as well as making new friends in School.”

Mrs. Taulu also added that no matter how hard life will be in Samoa we as parents have to push our children for education.

“That is our role as parents is to push and encourage our children to be in School because that’s the only solution to the hard life we have today.

“Their success in School can enable them to support them when they find jobs as well as supporting their parents.”
