Housing and water needs trouble young man

Kleig Tuloto is not ungrateful.

He is happy to have a roof over his head.

But the unemployed 20-year-old from Faleasi’u can only dream of living in a better house. He also wants his relatives to enjoy the same pleasure.

Their Samoan house is crooked; the poles that hold the house are weak and unstable.

The iron roofing leaks and even the tarpaulins used cannot hold back the rain.

While it is standard for many families to have a cemented floor, this one is wooden. But there are holes and cracks everywhere.

Speaking to the Village Voice team, he explained that the house has been there for a very long time.

He said it belongs to his uncle.

“The house is very old and I am the one that usually comes here.

“The water supply does not reach this area so most of the families here rely on water tanks. He doesn’t have a water tank.

“He may have electricity but for me I reckon that water is the most crucial part of living. Anyone could live without having power in their homes but not water.”

Mr. Tuloto expressed his sincere concern about his young cousins who live in the house.

“It has a small space to live in and I cannot guarantee that this house will still be standing in the next year. My uncle’s kids are still young and since they come here every time I fear for their safety.

He also mentioned that the cost of living for each family is one of the causes of their struggles and he relies on the land to be able to survive and take care of his parents.

“The chance of getting a job nowadays without a certificate is just a dream, having a good job that will be able to provide stable income has requirements.

“Life is hard and there is nothing that we can do about it but work and live within our own means.”
