Sunday title celebrations at Leauva’a
The Sao and Tupa’i chiefly titles of Salago, Leauva’a were bestowed upon two members of the Sagato and Fauga family on Sunday.
Held at the Maota o Avanā, the Sao title was bestowed upon Meki Fauga while Tupa’i was bestowed upon Ana Sagato. Both title holders are based overseas. Tupa’i Ana resides in New Zealand while Sao Meki is based in American Samoa.
Speaking to the Samoa Observer, Sao Meki said he is very humbled to receive such an honour from his family.
“This is such a huge honour from my family and I am ready to serve them to the best of my ability,” he said.
“Family is all we’ve got and no matter where we go in life our aiga will always be our fa’asinomaga. So today I have been given the honour to be the chief of my family and it is a big step in life. “I know this step of life will not be easy but with God everything will be okay.”
Tupa’i Ana acknowledged the support of her family not only in Samoa but aborad.
“Having a matai means more responsibilities,” she said.
“It’s not a small thing because we have been given the authority to lead our family with love.
“I want to thank God for his blessings; it’s all done now it’s time to serve our family to the best of our abilities.”
According to a member of the family Savali Sagato the Sao title has been passed down from her siblings.
“The reason why this title is being bestowed to my brother because it is his time,” she said.
“The title was bestowed upon my older brother Sao Milo who passed away this year and so we decided that it was time for Sao Fauga to look after the family.
“He is the only one out of the boys that’s left and so we believe that now is his turn and I pray to God that He will give the wisdom, knowledge and most of all the love to my brother to look after this family.”
