Water and electricity problems for family

Living in a rundown house with no water connection and electricity are the everyday struggles of a family at Moata’a-uta.

Faanati Talaia, 51, is a mother of four.

As the only breadwinner for the family, she says life is tough.

Mrs. Talaia told the Village Voice that her family needs help with water and electricity.

“Our family really needs help because what I earn from my work is really not enough for our family to survive on,” she said.

“We also need help for our shelter. This is just something small we are settling in for now, but I know for sure this is not safe for us, especially from strong winds up in this area.

“My husband just recently stopped working, so he can stay here in our house and start working on our land here.

“My eldest child already got married, and the second one lives at Vaiusu where we used to live, two more are still in school.”

Mrs. Talaia was tidying up her house when the Village Voice team met her yesterday morning.

She also said the only way they get water is from the rain and their neighbours by using a long tube lying next to their neighbour’s house.

“We have to boil the water first before consumption and that is why we also have these gallons right here in front of our house to collect rainwater.”

She also shared the struggles of having no electricity.

“The house we live in right now was just the only thing we could afford and as you can see there’s still no electricity.

“Communication is also a problem here with us especially when my shift at work finishes in the night and it is really scary coming around that time to our place.

“The only way we use to charge our phone is when I go to work, and that’s how hard life for our family is right now.”
