Five new matai holders celebrated a fresh chapter of their lives at Auala Savai’i during the weekend. Asoto’elau, the Maota of Leali’ifanolevalevale, was the venue of the special occasion.  The bestowal ceremony was conducted by Reverend Fa’auuga Pula of the Congregational Christian Church at Auala.

The new matai holders are Tuifa’asisina Selefuti Tamana Tanielu, Tuifa’asisina Eliu Iakopo, Puipuioa’ana Ionatana Tanielu, Le’autuleo’o Poseta Iakopo and Avamua Tavina Toai.

According to Leali’ifanolevalevale Dr. Iopu Tanielu, the high chief of the family, this is the first time in a long time their family has carried out a saofa’i.

“It has been almost twenty years since we last had a saofa’i,” he said. “And we thought that it was time to have a saofa’i as our children have grown up already and are ready to serve the family and the village through their new titles.”

Family members from New Zealand, America and Samoa gathered at Asoto’elau on Saturday 2 July, 2016 for this occasion.
