Future doctor tops St. Joseph’s College

Eighteen-year-old Lester Kamu of Tulaele is the Dux of St. Joseph’s College this year.

The announcement was made during the school’s prize giving at Alafua yesterday.

Lester is a Science student and he wants to become a doctor.  When he does, he will follow the footsteps of his father and his grandfather who are both doctors.

Speaking to the Sunday Samoan yesterday, Mr. Kamu said he humbled to have finished the year as dux.

“It was a tough journey for me,” he said.

“There was a lot of competition especially with some of my friends.”

“Amongst those friends of mine were the Ott brothers as you witnessed I had to compete with both of them.”

“And there were subjects that I was second and one of them was first and then there were other subjects that one of them came first and I was second.”

“I was only one mark higher than the second runner up, Achatz Ott, so it was a tough competition but all glory and honour goes back to God for all that he had done for me and for being with me on this journey.”

Mr. Kamu said Physics and Chemistry were tough but the toughest one was Mathematics.

“It was just too hard but I went for it anyways because I believed I could do it and today I proved it.”

Mr. Kamu will miss the St. Joseph’s life.

“I may recall the first year here in St. Joseph’s taught me that being a new kid here the teachers were very tough.”

“But along the way it gotten better I was used to the rules and standards of the school and the teachers were very helpful and understanding.”

So what’s next?

“I want to follow my father and grandfather’s footsteps,” he said.

“They were both doctors and I want to do that because I want to help people and save lives not only that but to help my family as well.”

The future doctor went on to say that he couldn’t do anything without the help of his family.

“It is a great feeling and I am humbled and honoured to be this year’s top student, thanks to my supporters and my sponsors.”

“Especially my mother she has always been there from the start, she is my inspiration and my biggest supporter.

“I thank my dad too for being supportive and understanding.”

Lester Kamu is the 7th child of Leilani and Tiomai Mose Kamu’s eight children from the village of Tulaele.
