The inaugural inter-school weightlifting competition has concluded on a high note with the winners being rewarded for their efforts.

Last week, a ceremony was organised with the help of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture at Gym One to celebrate the milestone.

The place was filled with parents, families, friends and teachers cheering and screaming as winning students made their way onto the stage to claim their medals.

President of the Samoa Weightlifting Federation, Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork, was pleased and proud of the results from the competition.

“The results I have seen after this competition were very satisfying.

“The only thing the Association will now focus on for the future, is to try and expand the competition so all schools throughout Samoa to get them to take part.”

The Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, Loau Keneti Sio, congratulated the winners.

He emphasized the significance of having parents work with officials and the Association to develop the competition.

“There’s a saying that goes, it takes the whole village to raise a kid, and that is you”.

Loau also reminded the students about Samoa hosting the South Pacific Games in 2019.

“To all the students, you should aim to represent Samoa at the international level in 2019.

“There’s no other way to be in national teams than from starting from grassroots development level and school competitions like this.”

In the girls division, Papauta Girls High School was the overall winner with Wesley College second and Faleata and Avele College in third and fourth spots.

The Best Female Lifter was awarded to Saofaiala Jim of the School of Hope.

In the boy’s division, the overall winner went to Faleata College while Leifi’ifi College came second. Maluafou College came third with Wesley College fourth.

The Best Male Lifter went to Don Opeloge of Avele College, after breaking the Oceania schoolboys records and the Commonwealth schoolboys records during the tournament.

A highlight of the event was the students meeting the Samoa National Weightlifting team who had just arrived with 12 gold medals from the Commonwealth and Oceania competition in Australia.
