Bladerunners blitz Marist Family to win touch title
The Bladerunners have done it.
They are the 2018 Marist Sports Week Open touch rugby mix champions having completely dominated their opponents, Marist family, in the final last night to win 3-0.
The game held under the lights at the Tuanaimato soccer fields was the culmination of two days of touch rugby action for this year’s Marist Sports Festival.
The day before, Bladerunners narrowly missed out on the Men’s title, losing a tough final, 4-3, to Marist.
But there was a chance for them to avenge the loss and with the help of their girls, Bladerunners had the last laugh last night, after a tough day where they had to get through a competition involving nine other teams to win.
After getting through pool play, Bladerunners overcame the Sydney Samoa team in a hotly contested second semifinal clash while Marist Family defeated Wellington Samoa to set up a thrilling local derby.
Wellington Samoa bounced back to defeat Sydney, 4-3, to claim 3rd place.
But the final clash of the tournament saw a dominance performance by the Bladerunners, scoring three unanswered tries in the first half.
Marist Family team had plenty of opportunities to fire back but their execution was lacking when it mattered.
Both teams were held scoreless during the second spell but Bladerunners by then had secured the game and the bragging rights for 2018.
Captain Sa’atia Su’a said he was proud of his team’s effort.
“I am really excited about what we have achieved,” he said.
“Big ups to my team for the awesome effort and performance throughout the tournament.”
Su’a also acknowledged the organizers and tournament director for the successful tournament.
