Savai’i ready to host their first Fishing tourney

The big island of Savai’i is ready to host its first Game Fishing tournament from 2nd May until 4th May 2017.

The President of the Savai’i Samoa Tourism Association, Tupa’i Sale’imoa Vaai, told the Samoa Observer the goal is to add fishing to the list of things to do for tourists on the big island.

“In the spirit of Savai’i trying to promote ourselves and do more so we are trying to do more events in Savaii so we have a fishing tournament on the first week of May from the 2nd of May till the 4th,” he said.

“It’s only for three days and we are in partnership with S.I.G.F.A.

“We set up a little group called the Savaii Fishing Association mainly for this tournament and we are hoping to put on more tournaments for the big island.

“Savaii Samoa Tourism Association is involved heavily because we are the ones that drive a lot of stuff in Savaii and so we are trying to put on more events and a lot economical activities to Savaii.”

Speaking of the tournament Tupa’i said there are already boats and anglers ready for the event.

“At the moment there are 15 confirmed local boats for the Savaii Fishing Tournament with some overseas anglers,” he said.

“There’s about 5 or 8 local boats that will have overseas anglers on them and like I said it is a first time event and we are hoping to run this one well and hopefully we can do more of these tournaments.

The tournament will be held at Asau and there will be prizes as well but our aim for this particular tournament is to try and make it a fun one.

“Not completely fun tournament but there will be prizes and we are still looking for more sponsors for the event and we are hopeful that with the involvement of the association and also the SIGFA we will make it a bit better.”

Moreover, the President of S.S.T.A. has a lot of confidence that this will be a success.

“Hopefully this is a start for them as this is the first time we are holding this tournament ad we are probably a little under prepared,” said Tupa’i.

“But one thing that us Samoans know how to do well is we know how to hold events, however, planning is probably one of our worst skills we have but hosting is one of the our best skills.

“Our aim is always towards that tourism market and so we are hoping that we can host two of these fishing tournaments in the big island.

“So we will be ready and hopefully it will be a successful one.”
