Unprofessional, unexpected

Imagine this. It’s been six months since your family’s case had been given a date by the Land and Titles Court.

So everyone prepares and on the week where the hearing is scheduled, all the family members fly in from Australia, New Zealand and other countries.

They come expecting and are ready for the proceedings.

Once they are all in Samoa, they get a letter hand delivered from the Court Registrar.

The message? It’s an advisory that the hearing has been postponed.

Yes that’s correct. And that’s precisely what happened to one family this week.

Unhappy family members told BTL that this is the second time their case has been adjourned.

When the family confronted the officials and demanded answers, they were told the Judge was on duty travel.

Really? At the beginning of the year?

“We get that he travels, but surely this would have been planned which means they could have at least notified us,” said one family member.

“In this day and age of emails and advance communication technologies, all it would’ve taken was an email to tell us that our matter has been adjourned. A week before. That could’ve saved us a lot of headaches and money.

“But as it stands today, we are all here only to be told that the case has been adjourned. This is sad. It’s very unprofessional.”

The family member said the trip to Apia from Australia, especially at time when airfares are extremely expensive, has cost his family thousands of tala they will not recover. They also have jobs back there where they have had to apply for leave.

“We find it extremely disappointing that they can just do this.”

BTL couldn’t agree more. And this family is not the only one. Many other families have suffered the same result.

How long will this sort of unprofessional attitude continue for?

Enough is enough.
