P.R. - With the National Literacy and Numeracy Week fast approaching, schools around the country are busily preparing to participate in the program at their respective zones.

This is the third year the program has been implemented with this year’s focusing not just on literacy but numeracy as well.

There is a variety of activities which have been designed to encourage a love for reading, writing, speaking and working with numbers in children.

The program aims to provide additional strategies for teachers to assist with their teaching as well as motivate parents and the whole community to dedicate more time to their children’s learning.

The program started last week for schools on the big island of Savai’i (16 – 19 August) and for Upolu, the program will be from 22nd to 26th August.

From the zones, the winners will then represent their zones at the national level during the National Week for Literacy and Numeracy from 5th to 9th September.

The theme this year is “Explore through words and numbers” and so far, this has certainly been the case for Savai’i in terms of the variety of activities students were involved in.

The participation rate of schools in Savai’i has been tremendous with all Government primary schools and colleges participating.  For Zone 3 (Faasalele’aga 1 & 2) & Zone 4 (Palauli & Palauli le Falefa). Some of the mission colleges were not able to attend.   For Upolu, the program will start this week on Monday 22nd August for all primary and secondary schools in Anoama’a 1 & 2, Aleipata, Fagaloa, Lepa & Lotofaga.

The host school with The Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture invites everyone to be part of the activities at the Zone Level as well as the National Literacy and Numeracy Week activities from 5th to 9th September.
