The Samoa Rugby Union 2018 National Women’s Sevens Series is back.

It’s set to kick off on 24 March at Apia Park.

This week will be the first round of three legs around Upolu. The second leg is on 7 April at Leulumoega Fou College grounds and Aleipata leg at the Samusu field on 14 April.

Eight teams will be competing for this weekend’s tournament, which includes Aana Blues, Marist, Aleipata 2 and Tiavea in Pool A, while Aleipata 1, Apia Maroons, Magiagi and Paul VI in Pool B.

According to a press release from the Samoa Rugby Union (S.R.U.), the series is a commitment by the S.R.U. to grow women’s rugby in clubs and provincial unions.

“The S.R.U. is looking to progress with sevens, but slowly transition to 10 a side rugby and eventually most importantly, 15 a side rugby, which is the main goal for women’s rugby this year.”

“S.R.U’s main goal is to bring women’s rugby on par with men’s rugby and incorporate a women’s competition in the Super 9 Rugby Championship with all nine franchises.”

The statement added the series will be played at the districts where women’s rugby is strongest right now, which are Apia, Aana and Aleipata. The objective is to promote women’s rugby in rural Upolu and later on in Savaii.

S.R.U. invites interested women’s rugby teams who want to be a part of the development of women’s rugby whether as a player, coach, referee or administrator to come to the Apia Park stadium this weekend.

“S.R.U. encourages women to attend our coaching courses and referee courses. We will also have team managers, match commissioners and administrators workshop, which we strongly encourage women to attend so that we have women involved in all aspects of rugby.”
