The education department has completed and assessment of the schools damaged by cyclone Val.

The report indicates than almost every school in the country needs repair.

Twenty seven school inspectors visited schools around the country last week to evaluate the amount of damage caused by the cyclone. Director of the Education Department, Manumaleuma Logologo, said that more than 70 per cent of the school buildings were badly affected and almost every school received some damage.

Logologo said the cost of the damage would be decided by the National Disaster Council and the reports had been filed together and would be given to the council this week.

Meanwhile, across the field at Leififi intermediate school, staff and students had started cleaning up. Most of the school roof had collapsed causing water to leak into the classrooms.

All the books had been taken to the school library for safety (since the room was not affected by the winds).

Head Mistress, Lematua said they could do very little without the help of the people.

As for rebuilding their classrooms, Lematua said they would have to wait for the Education department to give them some assistance before school starts next year.
