Some people can only dream of water. Some people don’t have water at all.

For a certain family at Afega, they have way too much water.

But it’s not because they wanted it.

During the heavy downpours, the government’s water pipes burst and excess water flowed onto their land.

Today, Seleni Levika, 21, of Afega is asking the government for help.

“You know we have long been wanting to fix this but I hope that by voicing this on the newspaper, the government could help us,” Seleni said.

“I know my parents aren’t here but they would want the same.”

“This side of Afega is called (Talivai) which simply means this area is holding the water back from flowing to the other side of the Village.”

“As you can see, our house is circled by water. The water comes from the inland water pipes that burst.”

“This happens all the time when there is heavy rainfall so we hope to get it fixed.”

Seleni said despite many requests to the government about these water pipes, nothing has been done.”

“We honestly don’t know why the government keeps on ignoring these requests about the water pipes.”

“We know whenever we voice these issues; it’s a big waste of time, because at the end of the day the government doesn’t seem to care.”

“They don’t pay attention to these small issues because it doesn’t affect them like it does to us.”

The flooding is a big inconvenience.

“We have no choice when the pipelines bursts around here,” Seleni said.

“It cost us our crops, the wood we use to cook our food, and it is difficult for us to travel back and forth to school and work through this flood.”

“It’s has been almost three weeks since the heavy rainfall but as you can see, our area is still flooded. We need help to deal with this. Please.”
