26 March 2017, 12:00AM

This week the Samoa Rugby Union(SRU) Development team held its ongoing School Development program in Savaii and Upolu, doing a complete circle around the whole island of Savaii and also in Matautu Falelatai.

The 3 day trip covered up to 2000 students from Primary & Secondary Schools, such as Salelavalu Primary School, Palauli Primary School, Tuasivi College, Savaii Sisifo College, Itu  Asau College, Alofiotaoa College, Vaiola Church College and Uesiliana College.

The Get into Rugby(GiR) and PiU(Pacific in Union) program was used in Primary Schools to get more boys and girls  physically active and involved in rugby, and also a step forward in preparing the kids for the Primary School GiR/PiU Rugby festival in July

Getting the young boys and girls familiar with running, side-stepping, catching and passing a rugby ball and most of all enjoying themselves at the young ages of 5 - 14 years is the baseline for their future.

At Secondary School level we covered the 1st XV, Under 16, Under 14 boys and Girls. We practiced the Key Factors required for lineouts, scrums, rucks, catching, passing, tackling techniques, attacking  drills, mauling  etc.

The feedback from schools was really positive and all the teachers & coaches were grateful for the knowledge and coaching tools given to them.

The beginning of the months of February and March the SRU Development team had similar programs with Upolu schools such as Malua Fou College, Samoa College, Anoamaa College, Vaimauga College, Saint Joseph’s College, Aana No. 2 College, Maagiagi Primary School, Peace Chapel Primary, Marist Brothers Mulivai Primary School, Falelatai  Primary .

The SRU Development team will also be holding a School Holiday Program in Upolu from the 10th - 13th April, and in Savaii from the 18th - 21st of April for boys and girls from ages 5 - 14 years of age.

The Team will also be holding Women’s Rugby festival on the 12th April.
