The University of the South Pacific’s Alafua Campus has closed and ended its 2018 academic year with its first ever student awards.

The event was convened at the Samoan Fale (house) in USP Alafua Campus and saw guests, students and university staff members participate.

According to the acting Campus Director, Associate Professor Mohammed Umar, the fundamental objective of the awards ceremony was to recognize and acknowledge students for their commitment, apart from their daily academic responsibilities.

Luaiufi Aiono, who is also the 2018 USP Students Association Alafua (USPSA) president, added it was also important to acknowledge the members of the community that contributed to the association and the USP Alafua Campus as a whole.

“The event was set up in such a way that it becomes a major annual activity for USPSA, due to time restrictions the funding will be sourced from the current USPSA Alafua budget, although in moving forward sponsorships will be sought to enable the hosting of such an event.

“It was also held on the last day of the exam due to many students that will depart the following weekend.

“The idea of combining it with the social and prom event was also very ideal, in terms of budgeting and the time of the Executives involved in the facilitating of such events,” Luaiufi said.

Eleven awards were presented at the event last Friday. First up was the Education and Welfare Component award, which was received by the winning debate team for the 50th Anniversary celebration and went to a team from the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education. The Sports and Recreation award went to Anamaria Su’a Tino, Roland Bebe and Soane Hoponoa.

The Social, Cultural and Religion Component award went to the Fijian Students Association for their weekly fellowship program. The USPSA Affiliate of the year award went to the U.S.P. Rotaract Club.

The USPSA Country Representative of the Year award went to Douglous Williams and the USPSA Executive of the Year Award was awarded to Eden Vaega.

The last award, the Recognition and Appreciation Awards, went to Peseta Desmond Lee Hang (President of USP Alumni Samoa), Ronna Seyleck Lee (former student welfare officer) and Paula and Simaima Tu’ifua of the Tongan community in Samoa. The last award is in recognition of the contribution of members of the community to activities, which are deemed beneficial for members of USPSA Alafua as well as in the promotion of USP Alafua as a whole.
