Perth couple loving spectacular Samoa

Admiring the lavalavas at the Fugalei Market was Bevan Trethowen yesterday.

When Dear Tourist approached him, he gladly agreed to be interviewed with his wife, Clair Cherry, joining in a few seconds later to share their experience of Samoa.

Bevan is from New Zealand and Clair is from Canada, but the couple has resided in Perth, Australia, most of their lives.

As first timers, they couldn’t resist but admire the lush surrounding, something that is a giveaway for any first timer to Samoa.

“It is a very beautiful place. We rented a car and drove around the island, amazing,” Clair said. “The reef around the island, spectacular,” Bevan added.

They came to Samoa to visit a few local friends and they’ve been here a week and a half.

“We came to visit our friends, but we left them for a few days and drove around the island,” Clair said.

And with a few days left before they depart, Samoa has left them in awe with what it offers, from the people, food to the atmosphere, some things that money can never buy and will surely lure them to the islands again.

“Samoa’s just very beautiful. The people are the best thing so far, the atmosphere, the beaches are beautiful, we’ve seen some resorts here, so beautiful, but the people are so lovely, friendly, kind and caring,” Clair shared.

“And the drinks and fish,” Bevan interrupted laughing, while explaining how he caught a big yellow fin tuna when he had gone fishing the previous day.

“We ate the tuna, we went to Home Café, and they cooked the tuna beautifully,” he said.

On that point, Clair added local hospitality and food were great.

“Yep, that’s why I have a big stomach right now,”said Bevan who massaged his stomach laughing when we told him it must have been the tuna.

They were glad to have missed Tropical Cyclone Gita, arriving two days later.

“The weather’s been really good, we came here two days after the cyclone and you guys did an amazing job cleaning up, it’s like there was never a cyclone that swept through here,” Clair said.

This is their first time to any Pacific Island and they have already made plans to return.

“We will definitely return to Samoa and recommend Samoa to our friends,” Bevan said.

Clair added: “We’re getting gifts for our friends, but it has to have Samoa on them.”

The couple both agreed that Samoa is amazing the way it is, with little or no changes at all to its surrounding. It’s perfect the way it is and definitely a secret that does not need to be advertised as a popular spot, up to a point where it becomes more of a curse than a giveaway.
