The dream is over for the Samoan national soccer team.

New Caledonia proved to be a superior opponent for the Samoan team at the O.F.C Cup, dashing Samoa’s hopes of winning.

While the country celebrated independence day on the first of June, the National Football team had little joy on the pitch during their second group match in the O.F.C Nations Cup.  

After a final score of 7-0 against the team from New Caledonia, coach Scott Easthope’s team failed to withstand the tournaments group phase.

It took only 18 minutes for New Caledonia to take the lead in the match, with Roy Kayara scoring past goalkeeper Faalavelave Matagi. Kevin Neemia doubled the advantage in ten minutes and shortly afterwards, Kayara scored for his second time against Samoa.

Seven minutes before the break, Cesar Lolohea extended his team’s lead even further. Additional goals were achieved in the second half from Jean-Brice Wadriako and Jorys Cexome, right before Jefferson Dahite wrapped up the scoring in the last minute of the match with a penalty.

Although the final outcome of this match ends Samoa’s dreams of reaching the tourney’s semi-finals, the team still has a chance to reach the third round in the qualification for the F.I.F.A World Cup 2018 in Russia by winning the upcoming match against the O.F.C Cup’s host team Papua New Guinea. The match will take place on Sunday, 5th of June.
