Unemployment blamed for Samoa’s social problems

Unemployment is something Samoa needs to deal with.

That’s because the lack of employment results in desperate people. Desperate people resort to desperate measures to get by and that includes violence.

For Ana Tele’a, 45, of Levi Sale’imoa, she sees the increase in number of unemployment as a threat to Samoa.

Ana said the rising number of crimes committed by youths is a result of unemployment.

“When they have nothing good to do in their spare time, they will surely be doing something no one thinks they will be doing,” Ana said.

She told the Village Voice that a contributing factor is the misuse of technology.

“Youths nowadays, mostly around the village, don’t have jobs but they have smartphones with them everywhere they go,” she said.

“That easy access allows them to watch violent movies online and watching too much TV while not doing any job causes them to do this sort of bad behavior.”

Ana said even though she was not working, she was doing her best to support her three kids in school.

“I am not working but I am doing a small work here in the village like sewing just to make sure I pay my bills and support my kids’ school fees”.

Ana’s husband is the only one working and she is happy her small work at home is more than enough to contribute to their financial income.

“I want my kids to all have jobs after school and that’s why I am working hard to support them with the help of my husband”.
