Last Thursday the Samoa National Youth Council conducted its quarterly members forum with those who are village youth representatives from around Samoa.

The underlying theme was “Influential communication and engagement to support SNYC in building strategic partnerships and strengthening its membership engagement and exercising leadership capacity on youth issues”.

In its mission to form and strengthen durable partnerships, SNYC lent its platform to the Samoa Returnees and Charitable Trust, M.N.R.E. Apia Waterfront Development Project and Gaualofa who presented three different issues and raised awareness on their current programs to seek youth engagement.

Samoa Returnees and Charitable Trust through its “Act Right Do Right” Awareness Program informed SNYC of its possible resolutions for youth gang issues arising within urban areas and talked to the members about making the right choices in situations that could end in violence.

The Apia Waterfront Development Project presented its draft plan to seek youth recommendations on informing policy and implementation development on issues or challenges from the draft plan.

Key focal areas were lobbied and expressed by its members included the need for relevant implementing partners to ensure the safety of the environment and impacts of climate change, promote youth focus initiatives such as youth markets, busking stations and street art as part of the plan and include SNYC as a development partner in enhancing the social, economic and political stability of its development through youth focused infrastructure.

Finally, the Gaualofa Crew presented on the Samoa Voyaging Society to revitalise Traditional Voyaging as part of the Samoan Cultural and Natural Heritage and to engage youth on the importance of contributing to the sustainable development and the preservation of Samoa Marine and land environment.

The SNYC members were given the opportunity on Friday 23 September 2016 to fully engage and participate in the sailing of the Gaualofa out on the Marina, Apia which was educational and enjoyable as seen on the faces of the members.

The forum was supported by SNYC's core partner the Pacific Leadership Program (PLP) as part of its strategy to enhance and strengthen leadership from SNYC and its members.
