Digicel has launched a Pacific-wide appeal, urging its customers throughout the region to “Donate to Fiji” via SMS.

Yesterday, the leading telecommunications provider in Samoa urged customers to come together for Fiji; to show their support for their wider Pacific family with a small but heart-felt donation.

Digicel customers in Samoa can instantly donate by texting into the short code 9222. Each text to shortcode 9222 is a donation of $1 deducted from mobile credit balance.

Two weeks ago, Fiji was hit by the Southern Hemisphere’s worst cyclone in recorded history. With winds of over 300km per hour, the category 5 cyclone caused unprecedented devastation and destruction nation-wide.

Digicel pledged FJD$150,000 to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund which has been set up to support teams of people now working around the clock to provide food, water, shelter and other basic necessities to the most vulnerable communities in Fiji.

All monies raised by Digicel’s #TogetherForFiji will go towards these efforts.

Digicel Asia Pacific CEO, Michael Murphy said, “The scale of devastation is significant and there is a real need for assistance and funding now, to help the people of Fiji get back on their feet as soon as possible.”

“Many houses were literally flattened and many families have lost everything,” he added. “If all of our customers across the Pacific were able to donate a little, we could, in theory, raise a substantial amount. One tala doesn’t buy you much these days, but together - all those talas stand to make a massive difference.”
