Father seeks help for a better family home

A father of three is seeking help for a proper house for his family.

Suega Fisaga from Afega lives in a small shack with his family and his wife is expecting their fourth child.

Their home was damaged by Tropical Cyclone Gita which caused the roof to leak whenever there’s torrential rainfall.

However, he is thankful that the floodwaters brought about by the cyclone did not enter his home.

Mr. Fisaga used to live with his parents in the same village but he chose to move inland so that he could live closer to his plantation and his workplace.

“We have a wooden bed stand in our house but no mattresses. We don’t have many resources here in our home. We try to use what we have such as mats and things like that,” Mr. Fisaga shared with the Village Voice team.

“We have tarpaulins to block the house from getting wet but it does not do much because it is torn and so every time it rains the water enters through its torn part.”

“This house is small too and the number of people in my family is growing,” said the 40-year-old.

Mr. Fisaga says water supply, electricity and their toilet are fine, it is just their home.

“I feel for my older children. They always play in the other shack that nobody lives in because there is barely any space here. Our shack is mostly for sleeping.”

“I have two children who are in school and I will be expecting another child soon. It is a blessing but this will also require a lot of money with the nappies and the baby clothes,” he said.

Mr. Fisaga has a plantation but he does not sell his crops because it is mostly used for nourishment.

“Having a plantation is one way of saving money. Although I could make extra money from selling them, feeding my family is a priority.”
