Samoa and India sign memo for Centre of Excellence

A Memorandum of Understanding (M.O.U) for the establishment of the Centre of Excellence in IT  (C.E.I.T.) was signed last Wednesday at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Suva.

The M.O.U was signed by Deputy Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mataafa, on behalf on the government of Samoa, while the Minister of State for External Affairs Gen (Dr) V. K. Singh (Retd) signed for the Republic of India.

The M.O.U was signed in the margins of the India Pacific Summit on Sustainable Development which was attended by a number of Pacific Leaders and Ministers from the region.

The President of Nauru and the Acting Prime Minister for Fiji also signed similar M.O.Us with the government of India for the establishment of Centres of Excellence in their respective countries.

The M.O.U on C.E.I.T sets out the responsibilities of the parties for the establishment of the Centre of Excellence in Information Technology in Samoa.

The implementing agency is the National University of Samoa and NUS has agreed to housing the Centre whereas the Indian government is prepared to set up the IT Infrastructure, including course materials and reference books in order to deliver IT courses.

The purpose of the Centre is to promote the development of Information Technology by delivering courses which would produce quality IT professionals.  India would also supply courseware / reference books.

In addition, under the M.O.U India will provide an opportunity to N.U.S to train four Samoan trainers for six months in advanced IT courses within India.

There are also other opportunities for the exchange of experts between India and Samoa which would benefit both countries, for delivery of IT training.  The equipment and materials provided by India for the Centre will be the property of NUS at the completion of the project.
