Isaiah B. Brunt, a blues musician with Samoan roots based in Australia, officially opened the 2018 Samoana Jazz and Arts Festival in Apia at a private function on Wednesday.

Accompanied by Joey Cummings and James Kneubuhl of the BB Kings, a blues band from American Samoa, guests at the Tiapapata Art Gallery enjoyed a rare evening of great music.

Co-hosted by Sara Moriarty, Australia’s High Commissioner to Samoa, the event was well attended by the many Australians living and working in Samoa, whether as long-term residents and contract workers or short-term volunteers.

Asked about the relationship between jazz and the blues, Isaiah stated that jazz is like the sophisticated cousin of the blues.

This was the first time Isaiah has performed in Samoa and he will be headlining the Samoana Jazz and Arts Festival concert at the Tanoa-Tusitala Hotel this evening.
