They must be teaching good history there at LDS Church School, Pesega. The team of Christabelle Gabriel and Phaedra Lameko took out the Independence History Quiz honours at a prize giving ceremony held at SamoaTel headquarters, Maluafou.
There was strong competition from St. Joseph’s College who came in second place. Samoa College, last year’s winners, came third after a tough semi-finals round against Leififi College.
Delivering the keynote address, Independence Organising Committee representative and Communications chief executive Tuaimalo Asamu Ah Sam reflected on the initiative, now in its third year.
“The Independence history quiz was an initiative by the committee to get students engaged and involved in the annual independence celebrations,” he said. “In the
past, it was just fautasi racing and village entertainment during celebrations while there was very little for students.
“The onus therefore for the quiz was to have them(students) not only meaningfully involved but also academically.”
On behalf of the Independence Organising Committee– this year chaired by Health minister Gatoloaifaana Amataga Alesana-Gidlow and Agriculture minister Taua Kitiona Seuala – Tuaimalo thanked the sponsors, schools, teachers, students and organisers.
Organised by the Rotaract Club of Apia – now for the second year – the competition is funded by government through the Organising Committee. Prizes were also donated by SamoaTel – who through acting chief executive Susan Hugget - has reiterated their support in the future.
