They’ve kept a low profile. It does not mean inactivity. They are silently working on policies to present to the country in the lead up to the general elections next year.
At least that is what president of The Peoples’ Party, Maposua Solomona Toailoa, said. The party held its AGM recently, with the bulk of the executive returned, said Maposua. Preparation is the most important thing, he said.
Candidate selections? “That’s another thing we’re working on at this time.”
Maposua is running. But in what constituency, he has not declared. His Maposua title comes from Lauli
i, a village in Vaimauga East.
The sitting member there is Cabinet minister Tuisugaletaua Sofara Aveau. A lawyer by profession, he holds other titles in other villages - Toleafoa, Maiava and Punafelutu.
Of interest is his Punafelutu title of Lano village, in the constituency of Fa’asaleleaga No. 4. If he runs using that title, it would most likely pit him against another party leader, Su’a Rimoni Ah Chong. Su’a is leader of Samoa Party. He ran in Fa’asaleleaga No. 4 in 2006.
But Su’a also has other choices since he is a matai in two other constituencies. Of course a match up between the two party leaders is unlikely while the possibility of a joining of forces exists. Over the years, the various parties, The People’s Party, Samoa Party, Tautua Samoa Party, and possibly others, have discussed mergers and coalitions. None have rejected the idea outright. Back
