The sound of horns, church bells and smiling drivers began a new era in Samoa’s history yesterday. Hundreds lined the streets of Apia at dawn to witness the moment when cars switched from the right side of the road to the left. There was a very strong police presence with officers manning countless checkpoints, warning drivers to slow down.
The presence of government officials who signed up to help police was very visible. An early morning service held at the Fire Service Headquarters was attended by key government officials including the man behind the switch, Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi.
Chairman of the National Council of Churches, Reverend Oka Fauolo conducted a prayer service to seek God’s blessings.
