Top job raises eyebrows

The appointment of a foreigner as the Airport Manager Samoa for Oceania Aviation Services (OAS) has raised eyebrows in the travel and tourism sector. Mike Bowden’s appointment as Manager was confirmed in an internal memo from the CEO of Oceania Aviation, Bruce Stokes, to staff members.

The memo obtained by the Weekend Observer says Mr Bowden is “the best man for the job.” But sources within the travel industry disagree.  They are unhappy because they feel the job could have been given to a local person. The person Mr Bowden is taking over from is Samoan.

Woman carries hopes of the nation
Saturday, 04 February 2012 10:27

Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork is absolutely right. This is a big year for sports in Samoa and if we are to win a medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games, our only realistic hope is golden woman, Ele Opeloge.

Tuaopepe, who is the national coach of weightlifting, made his views known when he was interviewed about Samoa’s preparations, two weeks ago. The coach, who is known for delivering results in gold, did not mince words. “Realistically [it’s] just Ele,” he said when he was asked about our medal prospects.

Schools are back

You know schools are back when traffic from Vaitele to town moves at a snail’s pace. Bumper-to-bumper yesterday morning was not fun.
For hundreds of parents, it was the ultimate welcome to another year of lunches, drop-offs, pick-ups, school fees, homework, culture days, exams and the most frustrating event, fundraising.

 Sam’s car
Few weeks ago, Samu bought the latest Clubsport from a car-yard.
He takes the long way home cruising up and down the street, giving the "ole Samoan" heads up to the chicks he passes. Finally he parks it at his home, mucks around, come night time he decides to take it for another spin, check out the chicks.
But low and behold, the car won’t move! No matter what he does the car just won't move. He hops out grumbling to himself that he's going to ring that darn car salesman in the morning!
Next morning while talking to the car salesman he tells him to go out and see if it will go this time. Low and behold car starts and moves off.
"Owzum" says Samu. Off he goes cruising around showing off. But come night time the thing won't move again!
This goes on for a couple weeks. So he gets sick of it and he takes it back to the car yard and starts ripping into the salesman.
Salesman asks him; “Are you putting it in the right gear Sam?”
Sam really blows his top; “Of course I’ve been putting the thing in the right gear. What do you take me for some kind of idiot? I put it D for day and N for night.”

Rugby media

The SRU is getting better at handling media requests.
A colleague of BTL contacted one of the coaches for an interview yesterday.
The coach declined saying interview requests must go through their media officer. BTL then contacted the media officer and finds out she’s on leave.
Only in Samoa!
