The hot sun did not stop Telea Viliamu.

He was hard at work selling samosa and pork buns. He knows that his family’s living depends on it.

He was spotted by the Village Voice in action yesterday.

The 27-year-old is keen to see his small business grow.

Telea from Faleula quit his job two years ago. He said he wanted a new start.

“So for the last two years, I have been providing for my family through this,” he said.

“All the money I get I allocate to care for my children, family and church obligations.”

Asked if he was interested in  another job, Telea said no.

“I compared my income earned while working previously, which is $150 to $170 weekly.

“However for me now, I make between $160 to $300 daily from selling homemade samosa and pork buns. And I love what I do.

“It may not be a big business but it is enough to get our family by.”

The father of two told the Village Voice that he made more money selling home made food than working in for another employer.

Telea added that the money he earned helps with the fa’alavelaves.

He said it’s a good option for young people who’ve dropped out of school and are looking for something productive to do.

“You need to finish your studies and always make sure that you do well in school as your parents rely on you,” he said.

“But if you have no job, don’t sit back and relax. Try to develop yourself by doing your own small business to make a living for your family.”

And that’s what Telea is doing despite the odds.
