The 2018 Miss Samoa Pageant was launched at the Taumeasina Island Resort yesterday.

Minister of Women, Community & Social Development, Faimalotoa Kika Iemaima Stowers, who witnessed the pageant’s launching, said the occasion was significant for Samoans as the event will get to be staged on Savai’i 33 years after its establishment.

“Having said that, the pageant represents the identity of a tamaitai Samoa (Samoan lady) and her leading role in families, business communities, and our Government.

“It is more than just a beauty pageant because our tamaitai Samoa are the pillars of strength, which has contributed to the evolution of Samoa to become the envy of the Pacific,” she said.

Faimalotoa said yesterday marked a new chapter for the nine brave young women, who will be vying for the Miss Samoa crown.

“It takes a lot of courage to run as a contestant because of the responsibilities associated to the role. As a contestant, you will carry the focus of your parents, relatives, including your entire extended families locally and abroad but also your kind sponsors.

“With the same token, you will gain valuable experience that will be useful for future endeavors, but rest assured I am confident that with the guidance of our Heavenly Father and the support of your parents, families and sponsors, anything is possible. Remember you are unique, and one of a kind and doing your best is all that we can ask of you.

“I commend Samoa Events Inc. (S.E.I.) the pageant host for taking the venue to the big island. No doubt Savaii residents will join me in commending S.E.I. for this great privilege. To all the contestants, may you have an enjoyable pageant and wishing you all the best, you are all winners,” he added.

The contestants will travel to Savai’i on September 3 where they will spend a week in order to get a first hand experience of life in rural villages in both Upolu and Savai’i and create a sense of ownership of the Miss Samoa Pageant crown.

The main idea is for the girls to get a first class experience of life in the villages and also create a sense of ownership that the Miss Samoa Pageant is for the people both in Upolu and Savai’i.

There will be a parade through Salelologa alongside a number of activities that have been arranged.

The programme includes a special Teuila Festival celebration in Savai’i for the tourists, businesses and communities. The Government of Samoa has entrusted the S.E.I. for managing, coordinating and hosting the pageant this year.

The pageant is to take place at the hall of Don Bosco at Salelologa on Saturday, September 8 at 10:00am.The order of appearances for the contestants vying for this year’s crown is:
