After the success of the Athletics competition last week, schools turned their attention to boxing and weightlifting at Gym 3, Tuanaimato yesterday.

Eight Colleges took part.

For Boxing, this year will be the second time they have had this sort of competition after a successful introduction last year.

President of Samoa Weightlifting, Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork said this is their first interschool competition.

“This year is the first time in history the Weightlifting Association has done this,” he said.

The tournament is driven by the Ministry of Education Sports and Culture to promote all the sports in schools, just like all the courses being taught in the classrooms.

Rev. Puao Su’a blessed the gathering of students, families and officials with a prayer.

Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, Loau Keneti Sio, delivered the keynote address.

“These programmes are the best ways to expose and to develop the talents you kids have,” he said.

“We have so many students that have these raw talents but we do not have the development programmes to nurture them.”

Loau also reminded parents and teachers of their part to play.

“Parents teachers and officials, you are here to support and encourage the students, but not to discourage them.”

The Minister urged students to use their talents wisely.

“God’s given talents to you boys and girls must be used wisely. It’s not for you to be proud and boast about.”

Both competitions were opened to boys and girls.

The weightlifting competition was divided into four divisions, with athletes competing in snatch, and Clean and Jerk lifts.

President of the Samoa Amateur Boxing Association, Fesola’i Vaaiga Tuigamala, acknowledged the Ministry of Education for their support.

“I am proud the Ministry of Education Sports and culture have come on board, and I’m grateful for the support given for this year’s competition,” he said.

“Our main goal is to develop the grassroots level for these sports, not only for those who enjoy it, but we want others to join the fun.”

The weightlifting competition continued into the night last night while the boxing finals will be held today.
