The world is not just about the U.S.A. any longer

Dear Editor

Re: U.S. Ambassador defends Trump, turns on China

Interesting to read the Trump-appointed U.S. Ambassador’s remarks on your Sunday front page.

First of all he defended his president’s sitting on the fence decision on the Paris Climate Agreement. The fact that it went against decisions taken by most of the rest of the world, was not unexpected given that Trump is still to acknowledge those two words - Climate Change.

Then he took a swipe at China.

A few facts for you Mr Brown.

It was only in his last few years as president that Obama recognized the Pacific by claiming the U.S. was a “Pacific country”.

Could that have been because Pacific countries had given up seeking development help from the U.S. and had turned to China?

Or was it because for years, Pacific countries like Samoa had US representatives who simply enjoyed a Pacific holiday while other genuine, Pacific countries like Japan, New Zealand and Australia helped where they could?

As for the “South China Sea” and the “destruction of coral reefs”, give us a break.

Don’t point the finger when your history is less than pristine.

Think back to the US involvement in Bikini Atoll and all the countries where the US has interfered in the leadership, or where war has escalated aided by the U.S. after which U.S. companies have gone in and made billions from rebuilding.

Not a very pretty story.

So as a “new kid on the block”, spare us the dire warnings and the finger pointing at other countries and learn your new job.

Perhaps also make an effort to learn of the development projects, big and small that China has initiated or assisted in for Samoa before you appoint yourself judge and jury .

The world is not just about the U.S.A. any longer.
