WELL DONE: SSAB Diamonds won the Netball Tournament

WELL DONE: SSAB Diamonds won the Netball Tournament

SSAB Diamonds was the winner of the Reckitt Benckiser Business House Tournament that was held at Gym 3 at Tuanaimato last week Wednesday.

The tournament was organised by Samoa Netball and the Association of Netball in Samoa and it went on for ten weeks and it was sponsored by Reckitt Benckiser and Taula.

In an interview with the Samoa Observer, Coach of the SSAB Diamonds Asia Stanley said that it was a tough tournament for them because most of their players are new to the game.

“The majority of our players did not play for the main season where as others teams they have really good players, so that is like a milestone for us because we are only a team that’s made up of new players,” she said.

“We have four to five players that are new to the game they don’t know how to play, all they know is that it’s netball but they literally don’t know anything about netball in terms of passing, dynamics and the technical side of things so that is another advantage of having this team was that we were able to play together and work together.

“It was a mixed team and we have been playing ever since this tournament started ten weeks ago.

“So last week Wednesday was the last day of the tournament and so we played three consecutive games which mean no breathing and no break time, so for the quarter finals we won against BSP, the semi finals we won against the AG’s Office and then we played against the AST industries and we won too with a close score of 16-15.”

Asia went on to say that having this tournament did not only give them the chance to meet other people but also gave them the chance to get to know each other from their team better.

SSAB’s heart is to always help the community so we wanted to get involve with the community affiliated programmes like this tournament and it was an opportunity for us to get to meet other businesses and other companies,” she said.

“[And] because we don’t get to see them every day so by having this tournament actually gives us the opportunity to actually get to know and meet other people from different government ministries, companies and other organization.

“However, the main thing that I want to emphasise is our team work.

“I mean yes we come to work every day and we see each other here at work but then we don’t get the chance to know each other more, but ever since we had this team we get to train with each other two days a week at Pesega.

“[And] having this team in place it’s like we got to know each other better and more than before so it was the team work that made us win this tournament.”

She also acknowledges the support from people who have helped them.

“We want to acknowledge Salevana Paramore and the LDS church for allowing us to train on their court,” she said.

“This win is dedicated to our CEO Fiti Leung Wai, our Deputy CEO, management and staff members of SSAB.”

The prize giving was held last night at Home Cafe at Malifa.
