The Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (S.A.S.N.OC) is reviving the Samoa Sports Awards.

On 16 April, the S.A.S.N.O.C organized ceremony will honour Samoa’s athletes, coaches, administrators and supporters of sports in the country.

Speaking to the Samoa Observer yesterday, the President of S.A.S.N.O.C, Fepulea’i Patrick Fepulea’i, said the planning for the event started last year.

“The last time we had a Sports Award was in 2007 and so we thought that it is time to revive the event again,” he said.

“There was a problem within the people that were there at that time and so when our Committee came in, we thought that it’s about time to have the event again.

“This is not something that we just sit around and all of a sudden announce, no we have been planning for this since last year and we put a lot of thought into this event.”

Fepulea’i said the evening will be a great event and it will be televised live throughout the country.

“We are also planning to have the event annually because we don’t want to make the same mistake of waiting around for eight years to have this event,” he said. “We were supposed to have the event last year in December; however we talked and decided to wait until the 2015 Calendar year was completed because this event includes everyone that performed since January 2015 till December 31st.

Nine awards will be up for grabs from nine different categories.

“There will be an award for Junior Sportsman and Junior Sportswoman, and award for Senior Sportsman and Senior Sportswoman, Coach of the Year, Administrator, Athlete with Disability and then the Supreme Award which is the main award of the night.

“We have already circulated all the criterias to all members of S.A.S.N.O.C.

“There will also be judges to conduct this event and so it’s going to be a good one for all our athletes and everyone that have been working so hard throughout the whole of last year.”

Asked about the Leadership Samoa’s Sports Awards which was launched last night at the N.U.S, Fepuleai said: “They approached us if they can do it as part of their project of the Class of 2015 and 2016 but I raised it within our board and we decided that we will be having our own Sports Awards.

“[But] good on them for doing this project.”
